How to Make a Cropped Top

Cropped tops are so fun and I would love to wear them so that my flat stomach could peek out, but alas I do not have a flat stomach, never really have, but I still love the idea of cropped tops. I use cropped tops to wear over dresses so that it looks like I am wearing a skirt rather than a dress. The cropped top makes it easier to wear a dress as a skirt because there is less fabric to tuck into the belt you use to cinch your waist. It can be down without a cropped top, but why not crop your top! It’s so easy!

First, start with a top that you want to crop. I love the Merona Favorite V-Neck Tee from Target (support April GoLightly by buying through this link :))

Next, lay down your favorite cropped top that hits in the perfect spot to use as a guide for your new cropped top. I used my other top from Target – Xhilaration® Junior’s Lace Back Cropped Top as my guideline.How-to-make-a-crop-top

I used a Fiskars Rotary Cutting Set with rotary cutter, ruler, and self healing mat to cut the perfect straight line across the top.  This is the best way I have found to cute a straight line. You can also use a scissors, but I recommend drawing a straight line with a ruler first.

Now you have the perfect length cropped top that will tuck nicely into belts without any extra fabric. Here, I am wearing my cropped top over a dress with this stretchy belt to cover where the cropped top ends.

  1. This is very cool. I’m a guy, so I’m all about making stuff instead of buying it. Now I have to figure out a way to approach my girlfriend without sounding like an oaf.

  2. I need to work on my belly so I can wear crop tops. I think they look so cute on my cousins and I would like to join the fashion party. 🙂

  5. That is really great, I hadn’t thought of trying this myself. My oldest is really into cropped tops right now, and has a bunch of tees that she doesn’t wear.

  6. This is great – especially if you want to sew a favorite tee and flowy skirt together to make a dress, knowing what length works for you b/c of the crop top makes the process that much more easier – thanks April!

  7. Fun! I like that you have yours tucked in – I cringe when I see all these teens walking around belly baring.
