How to Get More Wear Out of Your Dresses

Are you constantly buying dresses? I get it! They are easier to purchase because you do not have to think about matching top to bottom!

How to wear dresses as skirt

First, put on your favorite dresses that your friends have seen you in a million times because…Hello…they are your favorite! You can get more use of the dresses by using them as skirts. I started with my Karina Dress because I have been wearing it non-stop lately. They are so easy to wear!

Second, grab a cropped top or a DIY cropped top like the one I made from Target. Here are the DIY directions. I chose a Merona Favorite V-Neck Tee from Target to use as my cropped top for the dress to skirt DIY. If you have a large chest or have an hourglass figure, then v-neck is for you. If you have a smaller chest or look great in crew necks, then by all means, use a crew neck top. Either way, the top should be fitted to the body. Stay in a dark family so that you cannot see the top of the dress though your top.

Next, use a wide belt to cinch your waist and cover up the seam in between the “skirt” and top. This makes it look like you are tucking a top into a skirt rather than putting a top over a dress. I used a stretchy belt with a faux leather front for extra comfort.

Finish off with a little bit of jewelry and heels! 🙂

This Dress to Skirt DIY makes it easy to bring your dresses into the fall as you can throw a long sleeve button down, turtle neck, or long sleeve shirt over your dresses.

Have you worn dresses as skirts before? How excited are you to try to turn your dresses into skirts?

  1. This is brilliant! I’ve tried it before with a regular tee, but you’re so right that the extra fabric gathers. Now I just need the cutting supplies and a belt!

  4. This is so clever. I have a bunch of dresses that I wear all the time, and it would be great to mix them up a bit just by adding a top and belt.

  6. Well I guess my daughter was right and I was wrong! She’s been putting shirts over dresses and I told her it was weird, but then I KNOW I have no concept of fashion. You make it look so simple and it looks like you really bought the dress like that! Maybe they should start selling tops and belts like that WITH dresses so people can get two looks out of one purchase.

  9. Hi, I Hope you are Having a Great Day Today! I Really Love this Idea of Turning Dresses into Skirts; I am Always Turning One Piece of Clothing into Something Else! I Don’t Believe in Throwing Something Out if You Really Like the Fabric or the Print, even if it Means Just Making a Scarf Out of it! I Am Not Working Right Now Since I Had a Bad Motorcycle Accident So I Do Not Have the Money to Buy a Ton of Clothes & I Had to Find Ways to be Thrifty! One Problem I Have is that I am Tall & Curvy So Dresses on Me Tend to be a lot Shorter than they are on Some, So I Just Turn them into a Shirts by Wearing them with Tights & a Wide Belt! I Do Not Wear Shorts b/c I am Extremely Fair Skinned & is it Just Me or are They Literally Getting Shorter & Shorter Each Year? Nobody Wants to See that Much of Me and My White Legs & Cellulite! Thanks for this Very Insightful & Helpful Post; I Would Love to See More Posts Like This in the Future! Thank You & Have a Blessed Day! Jana
